    January 2003

Welcome to the 2003 Tyneside Motor Sport Group Navigation Rally Series. I am afraid we lost a couple of the 2002 events due to various reasons. I won't go on so when the regulations start to appear, get the entries sent in and good luck for the 2003 Series. Newcomers need to be encouraged as they are the new blood of the sport and it has been agreed that those new to the sport will receive very easy and straight forward navigation (Map References, Tulip Diagrams Grid Lines & Spot Heights).

ORGANISERS PLEASE NOTE Nothing mind-boggling. Hopefully, Newcomers will not be given loads of information that will confuse them and put them off entering future events.

Any comments, queries, please contact me.

Oh dear, we lost the John Robson as well, due to lack of entries, six was the last total I heard. I don't blame Eddie for cancelling it. So, why weren't there enough entries to warrant the event running. The simple answer is - I don't have an answer, there just doesn't seem to be the people around willing to get involved and do the events. How do we encourage new blood into the clubs, again I don't know the answer and I don't know anyone who does.

Next we have the Early Winter which is also this years Inter Association Road Rally on the 16th November, and I hope everyone has seen the regs. If not please contact either Derek McLean on 01368 850367 evenings or 01368 862604 daytime or Monty Pearson on 01361 884448 or by e-mail at monty.pearson@jcmr.u-net.com to request regs, but please hurry.

Please don't let the fact that it has been given the title of the Inter Association Road Rally as the clubmen side (TMSG) of the event will only run to the usual 90 miles.

If you can't compete, then why not turn out and marshal. Len Freshwater would love to hear from you. He sent an e-mail to various people the other day, see below

    Dear All,

This is a chance in a life time, Border Ecosse C.C. is hosting the inter-association Navigational Rally. With teams from all over the British Isles taking part. As Monty (Pearson) said this will probably be a once in a life time opportunity to organise such a big event. (knowing Monty this will be run to his usual high standard) BUT, there is always a but. We need a lot of volunteer marshals, we can not run with out you. The event starts from Jedburgh on Saturday 16th November 2002. The location is The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, just on the North side of the town on the A68. You would have to be there at 18.30hrs. It will be a long night but food will be available at the finish, again at the Woollen Mill. If you can help please contact me on Kelso 226604 or just e-mail me back. If you can make it I will e-mail you more specific details nearer the time. Please help if you can , this will be the biggest Navigational rally in the region for a number of years, never to be repeated.

    Cheers for now
    Len Freshwater

After the Early Winter, there is the Shaw Trophy on 28th December, heck, something to do between Christmas and New Year other than eat turkey and drink. Peter Metcalfe has all the info.

I don't know how many people have access to the Internet, but for interest and a bit of a giggle at times as various people wind each other up, you can't go further than the "Rallyforum.com" or the "Britishrally.co.uk" site. To be able to add your six pennyworth, you need to register, I have and it can be quite useful as I have given the Inter Association Road Rally a good plug on both sites.

Don't forget to send me your e-mail address's and I will send updates to you. If not, then good old Royal Mail or rather good old Consignia! will have to do. You may also like to know that the Series regulations and tables are now on the Internet. Go to hadrian-motorclub.co.uk on the web and this will redirect you to another site where the Tyneside Motor Sport Group Navigation Series information is held.

If you receive copies of the regulations, updates, etc. and don't want them please tell me so I can keep my lists of competitors current.

    Please remember

Nominations are required for the 'Spirit of the Series' award. Please bear this award in mind throughout the series as this award will be nominated by you, the competitors and NOT me the coordinator. No nominations = no award.

Someone to take over the co-ordination of the Series next year

    20 October 2002

To All Registered Organisers, Contenders, etc.

    Greetings.

I bet you thought I had disappeared without trace. Bad news. Sorry I haven't, but I have been busy with work and family life, which includes a certain daughter putting her leg through a glass panel. Not advised

So, what have you all been doing during the glorious! Summer! I know the last event actually to take place was the Teviotdale run by Hawick and Borders Motor Club. I recall that it was a wet night and quite cryptic in places. There were one or two problems on the night, but they were overcome. The numbered boards to signify the next instruction to use in the event of no marshal at a TC seemed to work OK. I admit to being a bit confused at first but soon got the hang of it. Quite a useful thing to use if an event is short of marshal's.

The Three Counties should have been next but due to various reasons, mainly a bad memory on my part to remember when stuff had to be sent to the MSA and the fact that time seems to disappear faster than I can cope with. We hope to run the event next March.

The Countdown would have followed but this didn't happen, I am led to believe due to lack of hands to help organise.

So what's next? Have you seen regulations for the John Robson which is running on 2nd November? If not, give Ed Graham a call on 01661 833167. Or if you prefer you could e-mail him to request a set of regulations. media@edg.ndo.co.uk. Entries required QUICKLY!

Following the JR, the Early Winter run by Border Ecosse is happening on the 16th November. This year, it is the Inter - Association Road Rally. This means that not only will we have the East of Scotland crews but also (hopefully) some of the top crews from down south. Regulations are available so if none have come your way, contact Monty Pearson on 01361 884448 or Derek McLean on 01368 850367. Monty can also be contacted by e-mail monty.pearson@jcmr.u-net.com

The Shaw Trophy has changed its date to 28th December. There you go, something to do between Christmas and the New Year!! For regs, contact Peter Metcalfe (01661 830963)

You may recall I said in my last (distant) ramblings that anyone with e-mail, please let me know and I will include you in my distribution lists. Please also let me know if you can accept updates of Series standings in Microsoft Excel format and the 'scribblings' are in Microsoft Word. Send me your e-mail address's and I will send updates to you. If not, then carrier pigeon will have to do. You may also like to know that the Series regulations and tables are now on the Internet. Go to hadrian-motorclub.co.uk on the web and this will redirect you to another site where the Tyneside Motor Sport Group Navigation Series information is held.

    13 October 2002

To All Registered Organisers, Contenders, etc.

Welcome to another series of ramblings or rather another series brought to you by the finest organisers of Navigational Rallies to be found anywhere in the North of England and southern Scotland.

I must apologise for not sending out the Series regulations. One reason was due to not really knowing what was going to happen in the after F & M. They are now produced and hopefully all those who wanted to do the Buglass, did. I am sorry if anyone missed out but I am under the impression that the organisers sent out numerous sets of regulations to previous competitors.

For those who did the Buglass, they all know about the excellent route and also the 'interesting' navigation. Some of it was on the simple but puzzling, and the rest was what we have come to expect. When the route had been sussed, then it was a straightforward blast to the TC.

The next round was to be the Three Counties, but due to the limited time following the announcement concerning the restart of events, it wasn't possible to organise. So it will hopefully run in late September along the lines of the Countdown which is run by Spadeadam. More of that later in the year.

Back to the Buglass. A new pairing of Peter Gibson and Richard Holdsworth from Whickham took the spoils after Andy Whittaker and yours truly managed to have a bit of brain fade and decided to use the 'other' route (A1) to get between controls, therefore missing out two route checks. I suppose everyone was a bit rusty, none more so than myself. Being first car on the road doesn't help either. That's life! So congratulations to Peter and Richard for their first win together on the first outing. I suppose Richard's dad, Spud (due to his potato field excursion on an ANCC event) couldn't have been too disheartened as he and Chris Pringle finished second with Andy Whittaker and I third. Unfortunately, Andrew Stephenson and Alan Edwards from Tynemouth went OTL, they were the only non-expert crew out. Another new crew (to me) were Phil Matthews and Ian Murray from Berwick won the Newcomers class with those old stalwarts in the Riley Elf, namely Stuart Bankier and Richard Gilbert won the Historic class. I'm not sure if I should be referring to the car or the crew in this case!

More new things. The next event will be the Teviotdale run by the Hawick and Border Car Club on the 20th April. The event will start near Melrose, which is about 75 miles from Newcastle and finishes in Ettrickbridge, which is about 80 miles back to Newcastle. Due to the date of the event and the lighter evenings, the regulations state the first car will be starting at 21:20pm. This obviously means that after the 90 odd miles, it will be a pretty late finish. Don't let that put you off. I have not witnessed the event, but have been led to believe that is worth the trip. The man to speak to is Derek McLean who can be contacted on 01368 850367. I have some regulations so if you receive a set, count your selves lucky, if not give Derek a bell and he will send you some. The regulations for this event are quite substantial but I understand the Derek likes to give people as much information as possible.

I have also included a copy of the Tyneside Motor Sport Group Series regulations.

With the advent of electronic communications, if you have access to email, I am happy to send updates this way. The Series standings are normally held in Microsoft Excel format and the 'scribblings' are in Microsoft Word. Send me your e-mail address's and I will send updates to you. If not, then carrier pigeon will have to do.

If you receive copies of the regulations, updates, etc. and don't want them please tell me so I can keep my lists of competitors current.

    New Coordinator!    What new coordinator?

There isn't one yet, but this time next year there will be. PLEASE.

Those were the words I started with last time. And still I wait.

Wasn't 2001 a fun year! The Durham Dales ran, but not a lot else. F & M saw to that. We have lost the Durham Dales, but have gained the Teviotdale. So there we all were, sitting round a glass of shandy, yes, that's right, about eight of us and one glass between us, at the Tyneside Motor Sport Group AGM when it was suggested that this would be a good time to revamp the Series a little.

So, here goes….. The Series started way back in 1991/92 with events running from September to March the following year. I know that because the Tyneside Motor Sport Group Trophy and the North East Rally Maps Trophy say so!

The rest of this year has been pretty dead anyway and at the time, no one expected any road events to run, we shall attempt to kick off the New Year with a New Series.

Same type of events, but running through the year. I have spoken to the MSA and they are happy for the Series to move to (hopefully) a calendar year series of events. It will be a case of wait and see.

The regulations will start to flow again but when? I can't say, no one can, so we wait and wait…….

But when they do I would like to think that the Series can continue and hopefully get stronger, because I know that everyone will be persuading non competeing club members to "give it a go"

The lowest level of licence required is the Non Race Clubman AND is still £10, entry fees (hopefully) will be no more than £25-£30, O/S maps however seem to keep climbing, what do they cost this week, £5.95. And after the event, there is the wonderful chat and stories of spins, near misses, wrong slots, need I go on. I won't go on so when the regulations start to appear, get the entries sent in and good luck for the 2002 Series.

Hopefully, they will not be given loads of information that will confuse them and put them off entering future events.

Good luck, and enjoy your sport.
